**Global Nature Watch Horizon** is an experimental, open, AI-powered system that combines peer-reviewed research from Land & Carbon Lab and Global Nature Watch (formerly Global Forest Watch) in a simple, chat-style interface. &#x20;

Users can ask questions in plain language in their own language and receive responses backed by data from Land & Carbon Lab and Global Nature Watch (formerly Global Forest Watch), supported by maps, statistics and context. Integrating near-real-time and annual satellite data, it reveals change across ecosystems, from forests to grasslands, croplands and other landscapes. &#x20;

As the platform continues to improve, it aims to make monitoring more comprehensive, faster and easier, helping people protect and restore ecosystems, support livelihoods and address climate challenges. &#x20;

Global Nature Watch (GNW) Horizon offers a set of core capabilities designed to help you explore, analyze and make sense of geospatial data to help monitor nature. &#x20;

&#x20;With GNW Horizon, you can ask questions in plain language to:&#x20;

* Discover and learn about peer-reviewed data from Land & Carbon Lab and Global Nature Watch (formerly Global Forest Watch)&#x20;
* Analyze data for your areas of interest and get insights to help make more sense of the data &#x20;
* Get answers that are tailored to your context as a starting point for reports, policies or project decisions&#x20;

&#x20;When you ask a question or provide a prompt (see [Prompt guidance](/resources/prompt-guidance)), GNW Horizon's AI assistant processes your intent using a system of agents (see [Models](/get-started/models)) to understand your request and set the context — data layer, area, date — for the response.

As you explore, you can save both individual insights and full conversations on the platform. Your saved areas, layers and conversations stay organized so you can return to earlier work, build a portfolio of places and questions and pick up right where you left off. &#x20;

Because GNW Horizon is in preview, its capabilities will continue to evolve. It is designed to be open, collaborative and transparent so anyone can build on it. Over time, you can expect new features to be added, existing ones to improve and some to be retired as we learn more about how best to help you work with nature data.&#x20;

GNW Horizon combines a conversational AI interface with structured geospatial data systems. While you interact with GNW Horizon in natural language, your request is processed through a deterministic[^1], step-by-step analytical workflow to ensure scientific accuracy and reproducibility.&#x20;

At a high level, GNW Horizon uses:&#x20;

* A large language model (LLM) to interpret your request and determine intent&#x20;
* Metadata-aware retrieval (Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG) to understand available datasets and boundaries&#x20;
* Deterministic data services to fetch and aggregate verified geospatial data&#x20;

Once a prompt is entered, GNW Horizon follows a sequential workflow.&#x20;

#### **How AI and Deterministic Systems Work Together**&#x20;

GNW Horizon combines two types of systems:&#x20;

**AI (Language Models)**&#x20;

* Understand your question&#x20;
* Select datasets and parameters&#x20;
* Explain trends and suggest follow-up questions&#x20;

**Deterministic Data Services**&#x20;

* Retrieve peer-reviewed data from reliable sources (e.g., Global Nature Watch and Land & Carbon Lab)&#x20;
* Perform geospatial calculations, drawing on the Data API and using [CodeAct ](#user-content-fn-2)[^2]
* Generate charts and visual outputs using CodeAct&#x20;
* Return the same results every time for the same inputs&#x20;

&#x20;AI helps interpret and explain. Deterministic systems perform the scientific analysis.&#x20;

#### Step 1: Understanding Your Request&#x20;

GNW Horizon's language model reads your question and identifies three key components:&#x20;

* Where — the geographic area you're asking about&#x20;
* What — the type of environmental data you need&#x20;
* When — the time period of interest&#x20;

&#x20;If any of these are missing or unclear, GNW Horizon will ask you to clarify before proceeding.&#x20;

#### Step 2: Identify the Location (Where)&#x20;

GNW Horizon first determines the specific geographic area you are asking about.&#x20;

* It matches your place name to a predefined Area of Interest (AOI) in its spatial database&#x20;
* If a place name is ambiguous (for example, multiple places share the same name), GNW Horizon will ask you to clarify&#x20;
* GNW Horizon analyzes one defined area at a time&#x20;
* You can also click directly on the map to select an area. When active datasets are loaded, a prompt will appear in the chat inviting you to run an analysis on that area immediately.&#x20;

No analysis begins until a specific location is confirmed.&#x20;

*AI interprets your place name. A rule-based system matches it to a predefined boundary.*&#x20;

#### Step 3: Dataset & Time Selection (What and When)&#x20;

Next, Horizon determines which dataset best answers your question.&#x20;

* It interprets keywords such as “fire,” “deforestation” or “land cover change”&#x20;
* It selects the appropriate data layer&#x20;
* It confirms or requests a time range (for example, “2018–2023” or “last three months”)&#x20;

When your question could be answered by more than one dataset - for example, if you ask about fires and several relevant datasets are available - the assistant may present options with a short explanation of each, rather than selecting one automatically. This helps you choose the dataset that best fits your question before the analysis runs.

If the time period is missing or unclear, Horizon will ask for clarification before proceeding.&#x20;

*AI selects the relevant dataset and parameters based on your request.*&#x20;

In some cases, the assistant may perform Step 3 in isolation - selecting a dataset or navigating to a location - without proceeding to data retrieval or analysis. This happens when your request is specific and self-contained, such as asking the assistant to add a layer to the map or move to a particular area. When a full analysis is needed, the assistant continues through Steps 4 and 5.

#### Step 4: Data Retrieval (Deterministic Query)&#x20;

Once the location, dataset and time range are confirmed, Horizon retrieves the relevant data from its underlying data sources.&#x20;

The data returned reflects:&#x20;

* The selected geographic boundary&#x20;
* The specified time range&#x20;
* The chosen dataset&#x20;

If any required information is missing, this step does not proceed.&#x20;

*This step is fully deterministic: data is retrieved directly from structured geospatial services.*&#x20;

#### Step 5: Analysis & Insight Generation&#x20;

Horizon then analyzes the retrieved data to produce user-friendly outputs. This includes:&#x20;

* Creating a chart or simple visualization&#x20;
* Summarizing key trends in plain language&#x20;
* Suggesting follow-up questions for deeper exploration&#x20;
* Providing access to the underlying code used to produce visualizations &#x20;

The goal is to make complex environmental data understandable and actionable without requiring technical expertise.&#x20;

Deterministic systems provide underlying value for charts. AI: generates executable code when creating charts (rather than manipulating data directly) using CodeAct and explains and summarizes the results. &#x20;

When your question is broad or contextual, the assistant may also draw on WRI and GNW (Formerly GFW) blog content to provide additional context. Where blog sources are used, they appear as inline links in the response so you can read the original content directly.

#### Status Updates & Transparency&#x20;

Throughout the process, GNW Horizon may provide short updates (for example, confirming the selected location or dataset). These updates are intended to keep you informed and ensure accuracy before analysis continues.

# Models

Global Nature Watch (GNW) Horizon is powered by a multi-model AI architecture designed to use the right model for each task—rather than relying on a single system for everything.

Instead of treating models as interchangeable alternatives, we run multiple specialized models in parallel, each responsible for different parts of the experience. For example, some models handle core reasoning and analysis, while others are optimized for lightweight tasks like dataset selection, naming or fast interactions.

Today, our production system primarily uses Google’s Gemini model family across these roles, allowing us to balance performance, speed and cost. This includes:

* A primary model for complex reasoning and user interactions
* Faster, lightweight models for simple or high-frequency tasks
* Dedicated models for code execution and data processing
* Embedding models for dataset retrieval and search

We continuously test and integrate models from other leading providers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, and may route specific tasks to different models as the system evolves.

This architecture allows us to improve reliability, efficiency and quality—while ensuring each part of the system is handled by the model best suited for it.

<mark style="background-color:blue;">**How it works:**</mark>&#x20;

1. **Processing your intent**: When you ask GNW Horizon a question, we use LangChain to process the natural language and determine your intent. This allows us to select the best AI models and analysis tools for the response.&#x20;
2. **Retrieving quality data**: Our data comes via APIs from Global Nature Watch (formerly Global Forest Watch)  and Land & Carbon Lab, initiatives powered by contributions from researchers and partners around the globe. This means peer-reviewed data from reliable sources.
3. **Composing a response**: The AI synthesizes the best response based the information at hand: user prompt, analyzed data and relevant context.&#x20;
4. **Returning a response**: Our agents are currently able to create spatial summary statistics, perform dataset searches and return natural-language summaries.

To ensure these LLMs provide answers that reflect real expertise and are factually correct (and don't "hallucinate"), the assistant is grounded using Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). This process works by:&#x20;
  * **Consulting a curated knowledge base:** Instead of relying solely on its general training, the LLM first consults our specific, curated knowledge base. This includes up-to-date layer descriptions, comprehensive metadata, internal research papers and expert guidance from WRI and Land & Carbon Lab.&#x20;
  * **Providing context to the LLM:** Relevant information retrieved from this knowledge base is provided as context to the LLM alongside your query. This ensures the assistant responds like a knowledgeable research assistant, pulling directly from our validated content.&#x20;
* <mark style="background-color:blue;">**Continuous performance evaluation:**</mark> We also run performance evaluations on the assistant. This ongoing testing ensures the tool maintains a high success rate when executing user queries and consistently delivers accurate and reliable results.&#x20;

While GNW Horizon's AI assistant is designed to generate high-quality, reliable insights by drawing on peer-reviewed geospatial data and carefully structured methodologies, it is still improving and may occasionally produce inaccurate responses, especially when interpreting quantitative results such as graphs or charts. The underlying data and map layers themselves are deterministic (not generated by AI) but LLMs are used to explain and summarize those results, which can sometimes introduce errors.&#x20;

**Global Nature Watch (GNW) Horizon is currently in preview** — an experimental release designed to test and improve AI capabilities for monitoring nature.&#x20;

While in preview, users may notice changes in assistant behavior, available data and application features as we iterate based on feedback and technical improvements.

During this phase:

* The **AI assistant** may behave inconsistently or change as we update underlying models.
* **Features and datasets** may be added, updated or removed as we improve coverage and reliability.
* **Results may contain errors or incomplete interpretations** — always verify with primary data sources before using results for analysis, reporting or decision-making.

This release marks the completion of the domain transition and brings visual rebrand updates across both platforms, alongside the blog sources feature that shipped in Sprint 8.

**WRI and GFW blog sources**

When you ask a broad or exploratory question, the assistant can now draw on blog content from WRI and GNW (Formerly GFW). Relevant posts appear as inline sources alongside the response, with links so you can navigate directly to the original content. The assistant also uses these sources to suggest follow-on analyses.

*Try: "What is driving deforestation in the Amazon?" - the assistant may surface related blog content alongside its response.*

**Global Forest Watch is now Global Nature Watch**

Users landing on the [Global Forest Watch platform](https://www.globalforestwatch.org/) will see a new announcement banner and updated logo marking the transition to Global Nature Watch. Further updates to the platform will follow in the coming weeks. Within this transition, this Global Nature Watch has now become ***Global Nature Watch Horizon (GNW Horizon)***.&#x20;

This release marks the start of the rebrand transition and introduces a redesigned map interface alongside two new modes for running an area analysis.

**Updated Data Catalogue and Area Tools panels**

Both panels have been redesigned as part of the ongoing map interface refresh. The Data Catalogue makes it easier to browse and add datasets, and the Area Tools panel has been updated to match. These are visible to all users now.

**Two ways to analyze an area (coming soon)**

Following the introduction of one-click analysis, you will soon be able to choose how your analysis runs when you click an area of the map:

* **Curated analysis** — returns a pre-built chart immediately, without using a query credit. Best for a fast answer to a standard question.
* **AI-assisted analysis** — generates a more flexible, bespoke response using the assistant. Uses one query credit.

This feature is currently in final testing and will be available to all users soon.

**WRI and GFW blog sources now available**

The GNW Horizon assistant can now draw on blog content from WRI and GNW (Formerly, Global Forest Watch) when answering broad or exploratory questions. When relevant blog posts are available, it will surface them as inline sources alongside its response, with links so you can read the original content directly.

This works best for open-ended questions where you want context alongside data, for example, asking about deforestation trends in a region, or the relationship between fire and tree cover loss. The assistant will suggest follow-on analyses based on what the blog content covers.

**June 2026**

**One-click analysis, quality-of-life improvements, and accessibility updates**&#x20;

This release focuses on making analysis faster to reach, easier to act on, and more accessible across different workflows.&#x20;

**One-click analysis**&#x20;

You can now click directly on an area of the map to trigger an analysis - no prompt required. When you click, a nudge appears in the chat inviting you to analyze the selected area. Click it, and the assistant gets to work immediately. This is the fastest way to get from the map to an insight.&#x20;

This feature works alongside the existing conversational flow - you can still type a question at any point.&#x20;

**Export and continue your analysis**&#x20;

Insights can now be taken further in a few new ways:&#x20;

* Export as image - Download any chart as a PNG using the Download menu on the insight card.&#x20;
* Continue in your preferred tool - Use the "Continue in..." dropdown to export your data and context as a prompt, ready to open directly in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini.&#x20;

**Chart scaling**&#x20;

When chart data shows little variation across the y-axis, you can now toggle "Fit to data" to rescale the axis and make smaller differences easier to read.&#x20;

**Accessibility improvements**&#x20;

Area of interest borders on the map are now more visually distinct across both light and dark basemaps, making it easier to identify selected areas at a glance.&#x20;

You can now also press a stop button to interrupt the assistant while it is reasoning&#x20;

**A redesigned workspace, a smarter assistant, and new fires data**

This release brings a significant update to how GNW Horizon looks and behaves. The map is now front and center, GNW Horizon has been rebuilt to handle more granular actions, and a new fires dataset has been added, along with tools to help you choose the right one.

**A fresh look and feel**

* **Map-first layout:** The workspace is now built around the map. The chat panel is more compact and glanceable, keeping the focus on where you are and what you are exploring.
* **Redesigned cards:** Dataset, area, and insight cards have been updated for clarity, so you can see at a glance what GNW Horizon has selected and why.
* **What's New panel:** A new in-app panel surfaces recent changes each time you open the application, so you are always up to date. Look for the notification in the header.
* **Persistent preview badge:** The preview disclaimer has moved to the header, where it is always accessible. It now links directly to key Help Center pages so you can get answers without leaving the app.
* **Ready to explore immediately:** Tree Cover Loss and GADM administrative boundaries are now active by default when you open GNW Horizon. Click any area and start asking questions straight away.

**Smarter, more composable assistant**

GNW Horizon has been rebuilt on a skills-based architecture. Rather than running a end-to-end analysis, it now performs individual actions and combines them when needed.

* Navigate the map to a location: *Try: "Go to Japan."*
* Add a specific dataset to the map: *Try: "Add tree cover loss to the map."*
* Explain an insight already on screen: *Try: "What does this chart show?"*
* Run a full analysis when that is what you need: *Try: "Analyze tree cover loss in Indonesia over the last 10 years."*

This makes GNW Horizon more responsive to shorter, more directed requests.

**Tree Cover Loss due to Fires (2001–2025)**

Tree Cover Loss due to Fires is now available as a map layer and analyzable by GNW Horizon, covering annual data from 2001 to 2025. You can toggle it on in the layer browser, filter by year, and ask GNW Horizon questions about it directly.

This dataset can be filtered by:

* Tree cover threshold
* Intact Forest Landscapes (IFL)
* Primary forests

**Dataset nudges**

With three fire-related datasets now available - DIST Alerts, Tree Cover Loss, and Tree Cover Loss due to Fires - GNW Horizon will prompt you to choose the most relevant one when your question could be answered by more than one option. It explains what each dataset covers and when it is most useful, so you can make an informed choice before the analysis runs.

*Try: "I'm interested in fires in Brazil" -* GNW Horizon *will offer options with a short explanation of each.*

<mark style="background-color:blue;">**May 2026**</mark>

**A more collaborative assistant**

The assistant now works more closely with you in conversation, giving you finer control over how it acts. You can tell it exactly what to do, and it holds your active area, dataset, and date range between turns so you can have a real back-and-forth without restating context every time.

* Pull-only requests stop at the data: When you ask for raw data, the assistant retrieves it and stops, so you can decide what to do next. Try: "Pull DIST alerts for Bern, Switzerland, for the last 2 weeks."
* Analysis requests go end-to-end: When you ask for a chart, insight, or analysis, the assistant continues through to a visualization with a short interpretation. Try: "Analyze tree cover loss in Canada, over the last 5 years."
* Clearer routing for short requests: Dataset-only ("pick TCL by driver") and area-only ("zoom to Gabon") requests now stop after the matching step instead of escalating into a full analysis. Try: "Pick the tree cover loss by driver dataset" - the assistant selects it and waits.

**The map as a workspace**

The map is now where you and the assistant work together. Insights appear on the map where the analysis happened - pinned to the area in focus, rather than scrolling away in chat. A redesigned legend brings the assistant's choices into plain view: active layers, the area in focus, the dataset and date range in use, and the opacity of each layer. You can see at a glance what's driving each result, and adjust it directly. Chat becomes a cleaner narration of what the assistant did and why; the map is where you explore and compare.

* Insights pinned to the map: Generated insights appear on the map alongside the area they describe, instead of in the chat thread. Navigate between recent insights with prev/next controls. Try: "Analyze tree cover loss in Pará since 2001" — the resulting chart appears on the map, not in chat.
* The assistant's selections, made visible: The area in focus, the active dataset, and the current date range are all surfaced on the map and in the legend, so it's always clear what the assistant has chosen on your behalf.
* A cleaner chat thread: Chat is now a narrative of what the assistant did and why. Dataset cards, area cards, and insights live in the workspace, not the chat — so the conversation stays scannable even after long sessions.

**Intact Forest Landscapes dataset**

GNW Horizon now hosts the **Intact Forest Landscapes dataset.** Ask GNW Horizon to filter TCL within Intact Forest Landscapes via the chat function. The results will then be visible on the map using 2025 data.

<mark style="background-color:blue;">**Tree Cover Loss 2025**</mark>

The latest annual Tree Cover Loss data is now available in GNW Horizon, with two new ways to refine your queries: filtering for primary forest and setting a specific canopy threshold. Together these let you ask more precise questions about where, and what kind of, forest loss is happening.

* **Latest Tree Cover Loss data:**  Ask about the most recent year of forest loss alongside the historical record (2001 onwards). *Try: "How much tree cover loss occurred globally in 2025?"*
* **Filter by Primary Forest:** Narrow any tree cover loss query to primary forest only, helping you separate loss in old-growth ecosystems from loss in younger or planted forest. *Try:* *"Show primary forest loss in Indonesia between 2002 and 2025."*
* **Specific tree canopy threshold:** Set the minimum canopy density (e.g. 30%, 50%, 75%) used to define "forest" in your query, so results align with the methodology you or your audience expect. *Try:* "What was tree cover loss in the DRC in 2025 using a 75% canopy threshold?"

**Improvements**

* **Ask about multiple areas at once:** You can now include several locations in a single question e.g. *"Show deforestation in Brazil, DRC and Indonesia."* Results are returned together for easy comparison.
* **Fewer errors, faster recovery:** The assistant now retries automatically when something goes wrong, reducing the chance of a query failing mid-analysis.
* **Model change:** Migrated to Google Gemini Flash, improving response speed without sacrificing quality for more  complex queries.

**New features**

* **Step-by-step AI reasoning now visible:** See how the AI reached its answer: the assistant now shows its reasoning steps as it works through your question.
* **Improved legends and AOI handling:** *Map legends and area labels are now clearer and more consistent across queries.*
* **Chart improvements:** General improvements to the chat interface for a smoother experience and clearer presentation
* **Data accessibility:** Chart data can now be viewed in fullscreen, toggled between a chart and table view, and downloaded as a `.csv` file.

Raw analytics data can also be downloaded in `.csv` format.

* **New dataset:** Added **Deforestation (sLUC) Emission Factors by Agricultural Crop** dataset with admin-unit coverage up to country level.

Global Nature Watch (GNW) Horizon is designed to help you quickly extract valuable, actionable insights from complex geospatial data sourced from Global Nature Watch (formerly Global Forest Watch) and Land & Carbon Lab. Think of it as an expert research assistant or colleague — the more precise and well-structured your questions (prompts), the more relevant and useful its answers will be.&#x20;

Here’s how to craft effective prompts to get the most value from the tool:

## 📝Core principles for effective prompting

### 1. Be clear and specific

Avoid vague or ambiguous language. Tell the tool exactly what information you are seeking.&#x20;

* Instead of: "Tell me about forests."&#x20;
* Try: "What was the total primary forest loss in the \[name of your defined area of interest] between 2018 and 2023, and what alerts were most frequent during that period?"&#x20;

### 2. Provide essential context

Always specify the geographic area you've defined (once selected or drawn in the tool) and the time period relevant to your query. You can also mention specific datasets if you have a preference.&#x20;

* "For \[your currently selected area] between \[start date] and \[end date], please summarize ..."&#x20;
* "Using land disturbance data, analyze the changes in ..."&#x20;
* You can also click directly on the map to select an area. When active datasets are loaded, a prompt will appear in the chat inviting you to run an analysis on that area immediately.&#x20;

### 3. State your goal and desired output

Clearly indicate what kind of answer you expect. Do you want a summary, a comparison, a list, a trend analysis or an explanation?&#x20;

* "Summarize the key land cover changes in ..."&#x20;
* "Compare the rate of tree cover gain in region A versus region B."&#x20;
* "Identify the top 3 areas with the highest carbon emissions from deforestation in this region."

### 4. Iterate and refine

If the first answer isn't precisely what you need, don't hesitate to refine your prompt. Add more detail, narrow the scope or rephrase your question. It's an interactive process, and the AI learns from your refinement.&#x20;

* First prompt: "Show me deforestation in Brazil."&#x20;
* Refined prompt: "For the Brazilian Amazon, specifically within the Xingu Indigenous Park, how much deforestation occurred between 2024 and 2025?"&#x20;

### 5. Understand the platform's scope

Remember that the AI assistant processes and interprets the GNW and Land & Carbon Lab data within the platform. It does not have real-time external knowledge, personal opinions or the ability to conduct fieldwork. Avoid questions that require subjective judgment, future predictions or information not present in the integrated datasets.&#x20;

* Avoid: "Will deforestation increase next year in this area?" or "Why did the local government approve this specific land use change?"&#x20;

# Access & Usage Limits

To control the costs of running Global Nature Watch (GNW) Horizon while it's in preview and ensure as many people as possible can test it out, each user has a limited number of prompts per day (1 prompt = 1 chat entry). The number of prompts allowed per day may fluctuate based on demand but will always be reflected in the upper right of the screen. You can view this number in the top right of your screen along with links to What's New and the Help Center.&#x20;

If you run out of prompts for the day, you can still manually browse and view data on the map by clicking on the "data layer" context chip in the chat.

We're evaluating ways to more efficiently answer user queries and bring down cost and are hopeful that we can eventually significantly increase daily prompt limits.

### Known Issues

Global Nature Watch (GNW) Horizon is an **experimental preview**. The platform combines AI assistance with a range of geospatial datasets, and both the underlying models and the data layers are actively evolving. Features, behaviors, data coverage, and outputs may change (sometimes significantly) between releases. You should always treat results as a starting point for investigation rather than as a finished analysis, and validate important findings against the original data sources before relying on them for decisions, reporting, or publication.

This page collects issues our team is currently aware of and working through. It is not exhaustive, and new issues are identified regularly. If you come across something that looks wrong or confusing, please let us know through the feedback tools in the platform (your reports help us prioritize).

### How the assistant interprets your question&#xD;

The AI assistant does not always interpret requests in the way a user might expect. You may notice:

* Date ranges in the response that do not match the date range you asked about, or totals that cover a wider span than intended.
* The assistant answering about a specific year when you did not specify one, or asking for a year when a reasonable default could have been used.
* Two similarly worded questions returning noticeably different answers.
* Occasional responses that do not clearly address the question that was asked.

If a response feels off, try rephrasing your question, being explicit about the time period, location, and topic, and check that the parameters shown in the response match what you intended.

### Which dataset the assistant chooses <a href="#which-dataset-the-assistant-chooses" id="which-dataset-the-assistant-chooses"></a>

The assistant selects datasets automatically based on your question. In some cases the selection may not be the most appropriate one for your use case. In particular:

* Queries about forest loss or deforestation may be answered using alert-style datasets (near-real-time disturbance signals) rather than annual loss datasets, or vice versa. These measure different things and are not directly interchangeable.
* The assistant may occasionally suggest an analysis or dataset that is not actually available on the platform.
* For some topics (for example, certain carbon storage questions), the most suitable dataset may not yet be integrated and a related dataset will be used instead.
* The assistant does not always select a more specific dataset (such as a primary-forest variant) when that would be the more appropriate choice for a tropical or sub-tropical query.

Where the choice of dataset matters to your interpretation, we recommend confirming which dataset was actually used and whether it is fit for the question you are asking.

### Numbers and calculations <a href="#numbers-and-calculations" id="numbers-and-calculations"></a>

Numerical results should be treated with care during the preview. Known points to be aware of:

* Figures on GNW Horizon may not always match equivalent figures you see elsewhere, even when the underlying dataset is the same. Differences can come from how the area, time period, or filters are applied.
* In some combinations of filters (for example, certain land-mask options), results can move in an unexpected direction compared with the unfiltered query.
* Emissions and removals queries occasionally return incomplete results, omit parts of the time series, or describe outputs in ways that do not fully match what was computed.

If a number looks surprising or important to a decision, please cross-check it against the original dataset rather than relying on the in-platform figure alone.

### Charts and visualizations <a href="#charts-and-visualisations" id="charts-and-visualisations"></a>

You may occasionally see inconsistencies between the chart and the accompanying narrative, or within the chart itself. Examples include:

* Chart titles or captions that reference a dataset, metric, or series that is not actually shown on the chart.
* Axis labels, units, legends, or sign conventions that are incorrect, missing, or inconsistent.
* Charts that render with missing or empty data even though the accompanying text implies results exist.
* Differences in how the same underlying data is visualized here compared with other products.
* Occasional failures to render a chart, shown as an error message in the chat. The assistant is usually able to continue its analysis and interpretation from the underlying data, so the written response should still be useful. If the chart itself does not appear, asking the assistant to try generating it again succeeds in the majority of cases.

When in doubt, the textual narrative and the underlying data values (not the chart formatting) are the better reference.

### Language, terminology, and tone <a href="#language-terminology-and-tone" id="language-terminology-and-tone"></a>

Because the assistant generates text, the way results are described is not always scientifically precise. We are actively refining this, but you may still see:

* Terms such as "deforestation", "forest loss", and "disturbance" used less precisely than their technical definitions require (for example, certain disturbance signals being described as deforestation when they may represent other processes such as fire).
* Subjective or evaluative language (for example, words like "significant") in places where a more neutral description is appropriate.
* Hedging or softened language where a direct statement would be clearer, and vice versa.
* Conclusions that combine or generalize across categories in ways the underlying data does not strictly support.
* Outputs that touch on sensitive topics (carbon credits, wildfire interpretation, conservation status) where the assistant's framing may not yet be sufficiently careful.

Please read the assistant's wording as AI-generated narrative, not as expert interpretation.

### Sources, citations, and dataset information <a href="#sources-citations-and-dataset-information" id="sources-citations-and-dataset-information"></a>

The platform is not yet fully reliable in describing the data behind an answer:

### Locations and maps <a href="#locations-and-maps" id="locations-and-maps"></a>

The way the assistant resolves a place name to a specific area on the map can be inconsistent:

* Common or ambiguous place names may resolve to a different location than you intended, particularly where multiple places share a name or where the match is partial.
* Some protected areas or administrative units are not yet reliably found by name.
* In certain named locations a very small or unrepresentative area may be selected.
* Some regions currently see a higher rate of query failures than others.
* Information describing the satellite imagery currently shown on the map is not always accurate.

Where the exact area matters (for example, for a named protected area or concession), please confirm visually on the map before drawing conclusions.

A few rough edges in the interface itself:

* Technical error messages from underlying tools may sometimes appear in the chat even when the assistant has recovered and continued successfully. These can usually be ignored if a complete answer follows.

We take the environmental impact of AI seriously and design GNW Horizon to be as efficient as possible, while constantly working to improve its performance.&#x20;

We minimize the footprint by:&#x20;

* <mark style="background-color:$primary;">**Using efficient models.**</mark> We use AI models that balance accuracy with efficiency — such as by reducing redundant processing by storing results of common questions — so we don’t use more computing power than necessary.&#x20;
* <mark style="background-color:$primary;">**Monitoring performance.**</mark> We consistently track how the platform is used so we can spot inefficiencies, improve speed and minimize unnecessary resource use — and be transparent about its operational impact.&#x20;

But what does this mean for the actual footprint? Some of our [best estimates](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-54271-x) are that one query emits around 2 to 3 grams of CO₂. To put that in perspective:&#x20;

* <mark style="background-color:$primary;">**Light use**</mark> (about 10 queries per week, \~500 per year) = \~1–1.5 kilograms CO₂ per year — about the same as driving a typical car 3–5 miles.&#x20;
* <mark style="background-color:$primary;">**Heavy use**</mark> (about 20 queries per day, \~7,000 per year) = \~14–20 kilograms CO₂ per year — about the same as a one-way economy flight of 100–150 km (e.g., Washington, DC, to Philadelphia).&#x20;

In contrast, CO₂ emissions from land use change (such as deforestation and conversion of other natural ecosystems for agriculture and other uses) are estimated at over 4 billion tonnes in 2024. GNW Horizon is designed to ultimately reduce waste, not create it — by enabling faster, smarter decisions about land, ecosystems and climate. We are confident that, over time, the environmental benefits it enables will outweigh the emissions from running the platform, and we are committed to driving that footprint down even further.

Rather than relying on general web information, it uses validated satellite data, established methodologies and documented metadata.&#x20;

To reduce the risk of misinterpretation, the system uses a structured approach to answering questions. When you submit a query, it doesn’t generate an answer directly—instead, it first identifies the relevant datasets, methods and geographic context, then executes the analysis using WRI-managed data services. This approach (sometimes called CodeAct[^1]) ensures that results are computed from source data, not inferred by a large language model alone.&#x20;

Responses are also linked to underlying documentation and metadata, so outputs can be traced back to their original data sources and methods.&#x20;

We continuously evaluate the system using real-world queries to ensure it selects the right datasets, applies appropriate safeguards and avoids misleading results.&#x20;

GNW Horizon is still experimental, so some responses may be incomplete or incorrect. We are actively improving the system and encourage users to share feedback if something doesn’t look right.&#x20;

GNW Horizon does not independently collect or alter this data. In addition, any sensitive information provided by users will be handled in line with WRI’s Privacy Policy, aiming to protect and promote the responsible use of data shared through the platform. &#x20;

The following Global Nature Watch Horizon Terms of Use (the “**AI Terms**”), govern the Global Nature Watch Horizon tool, which is an online platform that utilizes artificial intelligence technology to process and analyze forest monitoring data based on user queries in a chat style interface to deliver requested outputs (the “**AI Tool**”), the creation and use of WRI user account to facilitate use of the AI Tool, and other services where these AI Terms are posted  (collectively, the “**Services**”) that are owned and operated by World Resources Institute (“**WRI,**” “**we**,” “**us**,” or “**our**”). The Services help users gather information that is essential to making informed decisions about how to manage and protect forests, as well as holding governments and companies accountable for their impacts on forests. We’re excited for you to use the Service and help shape the future of geospatial monitoring.

The Services may allow you to access certain features of the AI Tool or create an Account (defined below) with us. If you are using the Services, you hereby certify that you are (i) over the age of eighteen (18), and are (ii) if you are creating an Account, you are physically located or are a resident of the jurisdiction you select as your “country.”

#### 2.                Changes to the Services

We may make improvements and/or changes to Services, add new features, or terminate the Services at any time without notice. We also: (i) reserve the right to change the Services at any time without any notice or liability to you or any other person; (ii) do not warrant that information on the Services is accurate, complete, reliable, current or error-free; and (iii) reserve the right to modify, cancel, or terminate Services for any other reason in our sole discretion. A.     While using the Services, you are required to comply with all applicable statutes, orders, regulations, rules and other laws. You may not use the Services for any fraudulent or unlawful purpose, and you may not take any action to interfere with the Services or any other party’s use of the Services. In addition, we expect users of the Services to respect the rights and dignity of others. For example, you may not do any of the following:

Input in the AI Tool any personal or sensitive personal information about yourself or third parties, such as name, email address, social security, credit card or bank account numbers, health or medical information, or other information that could be reasonably identified to an individual;

&#x20;                                       iii.            Reproduce, duplicate, copy, publicly display, frame, mirror, sell, resell or otherwise exploit for any commercial purposes, any portion of, use of, or access to the Services;

&#x20;                                       iv.            Impersonate any person or entity or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity in connection with the Services, or express or imply that we endorse any statement you make;

&#x20;                                         v.            Violate, or attempt to violate, the security of the Services;

&#x20;                                       vi.            Disseminate on the Services any viruses, worms, spyware, adware, or other malicious computer code, file or program that is harmful or invasive or is intended to damage or hijack the operation of, or monitor the use of, any hardware, software or equipment;

&#x20;                                      vii.            Reverse engineer, disassemble, decompile, or otherwise attempt to derive the method of operation of the Services;

&#x20;                                    viii.            Build a competitive product or service using the Services, build a product or service using similar ideas, features, functions, or graphics as the Services or determine whether the Services are within the scope of any patent;

&#x20;                                        ix.            Interfere in any manner with the operation or hosting of the Services or monitor the availability, performance, or functionality of the Services;

&#x20;                                         x.            Deep link to the Services for any purpose or frame the Services, place pop-up windows over any content, or otherwise affect the display of the Services;

&#x20;                                        xi.            Use any data mining, bots, spiders, automated tools or similar data gathering and extraction methods, directly or indirectly, on the Services or to collect any information from the Services or any other user of the Services; or

&#x20;                                      xii.            Assist or permit any third-parties in violating these AI Terms or other applicable laws or rules governing the use of the Services.

B.     *Linking*: You are granted a limited, non-exclusive right to create text hyperlinks to the Services for informational purposes, provided such links do not portray us in a false, misleading, derogatory or otherwise defamatory manner and provided that the linking Site does not contain any material that is unlawful, harmful, harassing, defamatory, threatening, intimidating, fraudulent, tortious, vulgar, obscene, hateful, pornographic, spam, discriminatory, violative of privacy or publicity rights, infringing of intellectual property or other proprietary rights, or otherwise objectionable in our sole discretion, including unauthorized or unsolicited advertising. Additionally, notwithstanding the foregoing, and subject to compliance with any instructions posted in the robots.txt file located in the Services’ root directory, we grant to the operators of public search engines permission to use spiders to copy Content from the Site for the sole purpose of (and solely to the extent necessary for) creating publicly available, searchable indices of such Content, but not caches or archives of such Content. We may revoke these permissions at any time.

#### 4.                Accounts

**A.**     The Services allow you to register and create an online account to access certain features of the AI Tool (an “**Account**”). If you are under the age of eighteen (18), then you are not permitted to create an Account.

B.     In general, you are not obligated to register for an Account in order to access the Services. However, certain sections and features of some of the Services are available only to users who have registered for an Account. We may reject, and you may not use, a user ID (or e-mail address) for any reason at our sole discretion. For example, we may reject a user ID (or e-mail address) that is already being used by someone else; that may be construed as impersonating another person; that belongs to another person; that violates the intellectual property or other rights of any person; or that is offensive. You may only have one active Account at any given time and you may not allow other people to use your Account to access the Services or participate in Services. WRI reserves the right to reject any account registration request, for any reason or no reason at all, in its sole discretion.

C.    If you are a Registered User, we expect you to accurately maintain and update any information about yourself that you have provided to us.

D.    You agree that you are responsible for all activities under your Account, and for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and restricting access to your computer so others may not access the Services in violation of these AI Terms. In addition, you agree to sign out from your Account at the end of each session if you are using a device that is shared with other people.

E.     You agree to notify us of any unauthorized use of your username, password or any other breach of security that you become aware of involving or relating to the Services by contacting us as soon as possible. We reserve the right to take any and all actions we deem necessary or reasonable to maintain the security of our Services and your Account, including without limitation, terminating your Account, changing your password or requesting information to authorize transactions on your Account. WE EXPLICITLY DISCLAIM LIABILITY FOR ANY AND ALL LOSSES AND DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS SECTION.

F.      We will not be liable for any loss or damage (of any kind and under any legal theory) to you or any third party arising from your inability or failure for any reason to comply with any of the foregoing obligations.

#### 5.                Interactive Chats and Chatbots

A.     Some of our Services may have chat, live support, instant messaging, or similar functionality to serve you better (“**Chats**”). If you are signed in to an Account while using a Chat, the Chat may link the Account information with you or the Chat interaction. You may not impersonate or attempt to gain information regarding another individual via a Chat. Information provided via a Chat may be inaccurate, and Chats may not always be available or error-free. Chats may be provided by third parties, and you may be entering into a contractual agreement with those third parties when you use the Chat.

B.     Chats may use interactive, automated computer programs and similar technologies to provide customer service via the Chat (“**Chatbots**”). Chatbots often work by using “natural language processing” technology to understand your questions and inputs and respond to them with relevant information or follow-up inquiries. Our Chatbots typically identify that you are interacting with a computer program and not a human, by setting up the Chat in such a way that it's apparent that a Chatbot is used. Chatbots use technology may respond to your inputs without human intervention. Although Chatbots are automated, your inputs and responses may be viewed and accessed by our real people, possibly in real time. The World Research Institute may immediately suspend or terminate the availability of the Service and Content (and any elements and features of them), in whole or in part, for any reason, in the World Research Institute's sole discretion, and without advance notice or liability. Without limiting the foregoing, if you take any action that the World Research Institute reasonably believes violates the foregoing Service and Content use restrictions (including by disclosing the names of any individuals associated with the Service or Content), then we may take any legally available action that we deem appropriate, in our sole discretion. However, we are not obligated to take any action not required by applicable law.

A.     When you use the Services or send communications to us through the Services, you are communicating with us electronically. You consent to receive electronically any communications related to your use of the Services. We may communicate with you by email or by posting notices on the Site. You agree that all agreements, notices, disclosures and other communications that are provided to you electronically satisfy any legal requirement that such communications be in writing. B.     You are responsible for any information, text, materials or content that you input into the Services, or otherwise transmit to us through our Services (“**User Content**”). You agree, represent and warrant that any User Content you transmit through our Services is truthful, accurate, not misleading and offered in good faith, and that you have the right to transmit such User Content. You shall not upload or otherwise make available on or through the Services any User Content that is protected by copyright, trademark or other proprietary right of any third party without the express written permission of the owner of such right(s). You shall be solely liable for any damages resulting from any infringement of copyright, trademark, proprietary rights, or any other harm resulting from such User Content. Additionally, uploading or providing information to use through the Services does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

C.    By submitting User Content to us, you grant to us (or warrant that the owner of such information and material has expressly granted to us) a royalty-free, perpetual, sublicensable, irrevocable, and unrestricted right and license: (a) to use, reproduce, display, modify, adapt, publish, perform, translate, transmit and distribute or otherwise make available to others such User Content (in whole or in part and for any purpose) worldwide; (b) to incorporate such User Content in other works in any form, media, product, service or technology now known or hereafter developed for any purpose, including sale, manufacture or advertising (and to exercise all intellectual property rights associated with such products or other works); and (c) to use your name, screen name, location, photograph, avatar, image, voice, likeness and biographical information provided in connection with the User Content in any and all media and for advertising or promotional purposes. Additionally, you irrevocably waive any “moral rights” or other rights with respect to attribution of authorship or integrity of your User Content that you may have under any applicable law or legal theory. By sending any ideas, concepts, know-how, proposals, techniques, suggestions or other User Content to us, you agree that: (i) we are free to use such User Content for any purpose, (ii) such User Content will be deemed not to be confidential or proprietary (iii) we may have something similar already under consideration or in development, and (iv) you are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement of any kind from us under any circumstances unless otherwise expressly agreed in writing by us. We reserve the right to revise and update these AI Terms at WRI’s sole discretion. All changes are effective immediately when we post the revisions.  Your continued use of the Website following the posting of revised Ai Terms means that you accept and agree to the changes.  You are responsible for periodically reviewing these AI Terms.

#### 11.           World Resources Institute’s Consent or Approval

As to any provision in these AI Terms, or applicable additional terms, that grants WRI a right of consent or approval, or permits WRI to exercise a right in its "sole discretion," WRI may exercise that right in its sole and absolute discretion. No WRI consent or approval may be deemed to have been granted by WRI without being in writing and signed by an officer of WRI.

#### 12.           Operation of Service; Availability of Products and Services; International Issues

WRI controls and operates the Service from its U.S.-based offices in the U.S.A., and WRI makes no representation that the Service is appropriate or available for use in every jurisdiction. We reserve the right to limit the availability of the Service and/or the provision of any content, program, product, service, or other feature described or available on the Service to any person, entity, geographic area, or jurisdiction, at any time and in our sole discretion, and to limit the volume of inputs or outputs provided by the AI Tool.

#### 13.           Investigations; Cooperation With Law Enforcement; Termination; Survival

A.     You agree that WRI shall, as permitted by applicable law, have the right, without limitation and without any obligation, to:

&#x20;                                           i.            investigate any suspected breaches of its Service security or its information technology or other systems or networks,

&#x20;                                         ii.            investigate any suspected breaches of these AI Terms and any applicable additional terms or any potential harm to our users or third parties,

Upon suspension or termination of your access to the Service, or upon notice from WRI, all rights granted to you under these AI Terms or any additional terms will cease immediately, and you agree that you will immediately discontinue use of the Service. A. B.     No waiver by WRI of any of the provisions hereof will be effective unless explicitly set forth in writing and signed by WRI so waiving. Except as otherwise set forth in these AI Terms, (i) no failure to exercise, or delay in exercising or enforcing, any rights, remedy, power, or privilege arising from these AI Terms will operate or be construed as a waiver thereof, and (ii) no single or partial exercise of any right, remedy, power, or privilege hereunder will preclude any other or further exercise thereof or the exercise of any other right, remedy, power, or privilege.

C.    The AI Terms are to be construed in accordance with and governed by the laws of the State of Delaware without giving effect to any choice of law rule that would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the laws of the State of Delaware to the rights and duties of you and us. Any dispute, claim, or controversy between you and WRI regarding, arising out of or relating to any aspect of these AI Terms, whether based in contract, statute, regulation, ordinance, tort (including, but not limited to, fraud, misrepresentation, fraudulent inducement, or negligence), including the validity, enforceability or scope of these Terms shall be brought only in state or federal court located in Washington, DC, and such, you hereby irrevocably submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of these courts and waive the defense of inconvenient forum except where prohibited by law.

D.    These AI Terms and the General Terms of Use, together with any additional terms are the entire agreement between you and us, regarding the Services.

E.     In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the English version of these AI Terms and any terms provided in any other language(s), the English version shall prevail.
